Generic Semaglutide

Generic semaglutide is the same molecule, approved by DCGI on bioequivalence — meaning it is required to behave the same in the body within a tight statistical margin, so clinical efficacy is expected to match branded at the same dose. Several Indian makers (e.g. Sun Pharma, Alkem) also ran India-based Phase III bridging studies. The main practical caveat is dose ceiling: many generics stop at 2 mg rather than the 2.4 mg obesity dose.

Branded Semaglutide

Generics start at about ₹220 per weekly shot — roughly ₹1,290/month for the cheapest vial brand (Eris Sundae) — and most pen generics land between ₹2,200 and ₹8,000/month. For a therapy taken for a year or more, that is a very large difference for the identical molecule.

Branded Semaglutide

Because it is the same molecule, the side-effect profile is the semaglutide profile: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort, peaking during dose escalation and easing at a stable dose. Rare but important: pancreatitis, gallbladder events, and worsening of unstable diabetic retinopathy.

Generic Semaglutide
